Diving & SnorkelLing on raiatea

Raiatea, the Sacred Island, offers an outstanding variety of scuba diving and snorkelling spots. One particular diving site can be found in the lagoon, on the “Nordby” shipwreck.

Now laying 30 metres below the surface in front of Hawaiki Nui Hotel’s Overwater Bungalows, the iron hull of the ship has remained mostly intact. Although light filters through the ship, it is best to bring a lamp in order to see all the amazing fish life that inhabit her.

The Nordby was a three-masted Danish Merchant ship, which sunk in Raiatea in 1900 on a journey back to Liverpool from New Zealand. While Nordby was sitting at anchor, a fierce storm caused the ship to slip anchor and run aground on hard coral.

The fish life is rich all around Raiatea, meaning amazing diving experiences for both beginner and experienced divers.

Let yourself be inspired by the Sacred Island underwater secrets!
